Physicians’ Benefits Trust (PBT) – Insurance designed for Physicians, by Physicians

In 1987, the Illinois State Medical Society and the Chicago Medical Society merged their member insurance programs together into a single, professionally administered health care trust—Physicians’ Benefits Trust (PBT). This Trust is guided by a nine-member public Board of Directors comprised primarily of physicians. This allowed PBT to continue to offer a traditional indemnity health insurance plan that provided complete freedom in the choice of physicians and other health care providers without managed care provisions (except for organ transplants).

In 1998, PBT purchased its own life insurance company. Physicians' Benefits Trust Life Insurance Company (PBTLIC) is the underwriter for all of PBT’s health and dental plans. A 100% owned subsidiary of ISMIE Mutual Insurance Company, PBTLIC is a financially solid insurer you can count on. Today, the PBTLIC health insurance plans alone cover over 7,000 insureds in the state of Illinois. Other independent, financially sound commercial carriers insure additional PBT plans, such as term life and long-term disability coverage.
